This is a test, this is only a test.
A long, long time ago, my dad was living in Seattle and I was up visiting for a couple weeks. We've always shared a mutual taste in music, so naturally we're cruising around jamming some classic rock when the radio station starts to play this weird, kind of crappy, but kind of cool song. It goes something like this:
*intense drum beat in background*
This is a test,
This is only a test,
This is a test,
something something emergency broadcast system
We both think it's really cool and figure the radio station had produced it themselves as a cool filler or something. The rest of the day it's stuck in our heads and we keep joking about it.
The actual song and event itself were pretty insignificant, but as a 10-year old kid, some of those moments stick in your head and you continue to reflect on the nostalgia. So for the past ~15 years, I've periodically Googled phrases like "this is a test lyrics", "this is only a test mp3", etc. to find that song and reclaim an artifact of my childhood, but to no avail..
Flash forward to today while I'm building a snowboarding playlist and think "Hey I should add some songs from that old N64 game, 1080 Snowboarding". As I play the soundtrack album on Spotify, a song starts to play and it goes something like this:
This is a test,
This is only a test.
Mother of God. I went apeshit. This really, really shitty song is the key piece missing from one of my most trademark memories with my father. My childhood is complete. I have solved the mystery of the missing song. All the while the song was on a game that I have spent countless hours on but never made the connection. The radio station was simply playing a track from the game that was popular at the time.
So none of this is probably significant to you, but it is very much to me. Without further ado:
